About This Release
After capturing the hearts of critics and fans alike with his self-titled LP, Philip James de Vries returns to Wide Angle Recordings alongisde an exceptional group of talented producers. Variations is a unique collection of remixes that fuses the shoe-gazing sounds of electronica with the rolling depth of progressive house.
The EP begins with new-comer Trevor and Ever, who creates a broken beat, uplifting interpretation of Earth and Mind. This intelligent remix manages to completely reinvent itself while subtly maintaining elements from the original.
For the second remix, Wide Angle Recordings is thrilled to welcome back Mattheis, who delivers a beautiful rendition of Literal Omission. Thick layers of melody and atmosphere evolve over 11 minutes of hypnotic listening pleasure.
Philip James de Vries also makes an appearance on Variations with his completely reimagined version of Deep Blue Sea. Gone are the rustic guitars and in their place, deep hypnotic synths and mind-bending vocal transformations.
The fourth remix on the EP comes from the rising star of deep and mysterious techno, PHM. True to form, the Bulgarian producer delivers a haunting version of Just Like Haze that draws out synths from the original and layers them onto a heavy, dance-influenced foundation.
The EP closes with none other than Jesse Somfay, who returns to Wide Angle Recordings with a completely atmospheric remix of Mother, When You Said… Somfay works his subtle magic to create an otherworldly, 6 minute listening experience.
Variations is a perfect compliment to the original album and highlights the diverse and mesmerizing nature of the producers involved. It also cements the artists among the most talented and original in the scene today.
